Weta's master swordsmith, Peter Lyon, has made this "One-of-a-kind" sword exclusively for Weta's customers. Peter joined Weta in the early days of Lord Of The Rings, and has created all the iconic weapons from the movies - Anduril, Narsil, Glamdring, Sting - all took shape in Peter's smithy. Since then, Peter's work has included Japanese blades for The Last Samurai, fantastical creations for The Chronicles Of Narnia and most recently for Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull.
The Machaera has sprung from a unique blend of influences. Peter wanted to create a sword that was the polar opposite of the Longsword. The result is an incredibly dynamic piece with intricate detail and sweeping curves. It is partly inspired by an ancient Greek sword called the Machaera, the forerunner of the modern Kukhri, but with unusual features not found in historical swords.
Vital statistics:
Blade length: 65.0 cm, Overall length: 77.5 cm , Weight: 1.425 kg, Balance point: 6.1 cm along the blade.
Details:
The blade broadens towards the tip, a feature that adds to the cutting power of the blade; but also the point is near enough to the line of the grip to allow effective thrusts. "The curve of the fuller continues into one arm of the hand guard, which is also stepped above the upper and lower arms. The cast bronze grip is based on a historical machaera grip, the heron head curving around to form a knuckle guard that also aligns with the steel hand guard, which was cut from a block of solid steel.
This sword, together with the impressive Late Medieval Longsword, are the first two swords by Peter Lyon to be made available to collectors through our website. It's one-of-a-kind. Peter will never make another one exactly the same.
