In the bucolic bosom of the earth, hobbits oftentimes fashioned their abodes nestled snugly within the rolling hillocks, where they dwelt beneath the surface in round-doored tunnels, lovingly referred to as smials. These dwellings, a symphony of simplicity at their humblest, bereft of even a solitary window, harmonized with the extensive grandeur of such renowned subterranean domains as Bag End on The Hill or the sprawling Brandy Hall, which played host to an entire extended family.

A multitude of hobbit-holes were designed and built for The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. Here, a selection of vibrant and varied entrances to the hobbit’s many homes have been drawn together by Senior Concept Artist Daniel Falconer..
